One of Many Reasons I'm Still Voting
"There's a big difference between a disappointing friend and a deadly enemy."--Bill Maher, last night.
I rail on Obama for not being as strong a president as he could be; for mouthing progressive rhetoric that he doesn't tend to carry through; for allowing his enemies to dictate the terms and barely even defend himself and his purported policies from their actually-very-vulnerable onslaught. I say these things because I believe he could succeed, but seems not to have the will for it that he could. It also disgusts me to see supposed liberals thinking denial is any answer. That's what Republicans do, hide, deny, and never fix their mistakes nor learn from. It repulses me when any side insists on a rah-rah team spirit approach to politics, and blind orthodoxy. I am not a Democrat per se. It's just (a) there is no viable third party that can do more than spolit the vote in favor of someone I definitely don't want, and (b) the Democrats and I are in agreement on a majority of issues, and at least what I take to be their basic principles. They disappoint me. They lack courage. But this implies that they could and would
do good if they did
put some more bone in their backs.
This, of course, means that I think the Republicans are no sane or smart alternative. Especially in their current form. My first president was Nixon(inaugurated two days before I was born, but I had to come out anyway), and my first memory is cartoons interrupted for John Dean's testimony, so my standard is high. But I have never seen the GOP as crazy, stupid and frightening as it is right now, and they deserve nothing. They ran the country into the hole it's in now, regardless of Obama's success or failure or mediocrity in fixing it. Whatever Obama does can be no worse, or even as bad, as what they did and would do if brought back into power.
Seriously, there is every reason to be critical, but no reason for this country to kill itself. And that's what giving these
Republicans power again would do.
So don't. Vote your self-preservation, not self-destruction. Voting GOP this year will kill America when we're just climbing back to life. With any further power in Congress, with more governors, they will stall any progress all the more brutally, because there's still two more years to weaken Obama till 2012. If you did not like the last two years, do not make it worse. Do not break any chance of its getting better.
And then maybe Obama's will may make its appearance and not see its shadow.
