I mean Mitt Romney tonight, insisting that the government, this government, the one that's been in power for the past 8 years, is liberal. That the expansion of said government, and its spending, is liberals' doing.
I realize the Republicans can only get energized in a paranoid, embattled, bunker state of mind, in which the entire world is liberal except them and out to destroy them. It's a common mentality in the more extreme parts of the Christian Right; see Jesus Camp or any Jack Chick comic for examples.
But to try to pretend the last 8 years, through most of which they held unilateral and/or unchallenged power and failed due to their own mistakes and negligence, simply didn't happen? It is a reflection of their awareness that they accomplished nothing positive, not even for themselves, and have absolutely nothing to be proud of. But the degree of their denial is kind of frightening.
But they are. They're trying to erase the past 8 years, maybe find a way to blame it on the Clintons, if they get desperate enough. They're pleading for a do-over.
It's a reassuring thought, though, that the sane among Republicans must be completely abandoning McCain, if he's resorting to alienating everybody but the people who thought Terry Schiavo's corpse should be kept technically-alive forever.
Problem with that strategy is: if that's all you've got, you're not going to win. Especially if stuff like this tidbit about an affair keeps coming out and the Christian Right has any of their professed principles left.
