  Republican Desperation Watch: Rick Santorum

Someone's awfully snippy and defensive. And doesn't realize how that looks on TV.

But I guess he should be worried after saying this about Katrina victims on camera while New Orleans was still under water. Remember? Ah, those were the days, when the GOP was so sure of eternal power that they felt free to say what's really on their minds.

But he's under a lot of pressure. Just look at how badly his campaign is going. And here he thought he was going to win on Christ and Bush just a year ago.

  Compassionate Conservatism: An Image

[Republicans deal with protesters at a 2004 Bush rally in Colmar, Pa.]

From Orcinus. Also this interesting little speech from a right-wing freak named Hal Turner on what good losers the right wing plan to be next week:

Suppose, HYPOTHETICALLY just for the sake of argument, that not all of the Congress and Supreme Court need to be removed. The House of Representatives consists of 435 members. The Senate consists of 100 members. But not all of them are "problems."

For the purpose of this HYPOTHETICAL discussion, let's say that only half of the US House and half of the US Senate are "problems" That's a total of 267 "problems" in Congress. Obviously, there are at least three "problems" on the Supreme Court. 267 + 3 = 270 total "problems."

Imagine if you will, teams of 5 committed citizens each, who were fed up with these "problems."

270 x 5 = 1,350 committed citizens needed to resolve these "problems."

Do you think that in America, a nation of 300,000,000 people, there are 1,350 committed citizens willing to put it all on the line to "correct" these "problems" and thus save the nation? I do.

It could be called "patriotic assassination."

It seems to me that a HYPOTHETICAL operation using teams of five men assigned to each "problem," could gather information on the assigned persons. It is easy to find out things like daily schedules, public appearances, travel routes to and from work, etc.. Once the data was collected and analyzed a time and date could be set for "solving" these "problems."
It really makes you proud to be an American.

By the way, Orcinus has some more tidbits on the scummy Mr. Turner, like this remark on African-Americans:

During the 1990s, Turner made a habit of calling into Hannity's WABC radio program as "Hal from North Bergen," one of the show's regular callers. "Hal" liked to say increasingly outrageous things: in August 1998, according to the One People's Project profile [Google cache], he remarked on Hannity's show that "if it weren't for the white man, blacks would still be swinging from the trees in Africa." Hannity not only failed to rebuke "Hal" for the remark, he continued plugging into Turner whenever he called.
As a former Southerner, I find Turner's point...well, kind of retarded. But then, I guess not a lot of black folks were lynched in New Jersey. At least not in sight of his mom's basement.

The kindness of the American white man in Oklahoma.

And here's a piece on Santorum's lies in the PA Senate race. They're so incredibly desperate it's hilarious. You can tell that they have no rudder anymore because they never talk about what they have accomplished or will accomplish--just trying to scare voters away from the Democrats. Pathetic.

So Rick's against happiness and its pursuit. And how does he feel about privacy? Well, you already know his stance on abortion, but here's his quaint stance on family planning in general. Which is much like the inclination towards planning the GOP has shown--for instance, Iraq--throughout the last five years.

Bribery Is Such An Ugly Word; Bush Prefers "Free Market"

You give money to Bush; Bush tries to make you a federal judge. Seems sensible, doesn't it?

Oh wait, that's a kind of bribery.
At least two dozen federal judges appointed by President Bush since 2001 made political contributions to key Republicans or to the president himself while under consideration for their judgeships, government records show. A four-month investigation of Bush-appointed judges by the Center for Investigative Reporting reveals that six appellate court judges and 18 district court judges contributed a total of more than $44,000 to politicians who were influential in their appointments. Some gave money directly to Bush after he officially nominated them. Other judges contributed to Republican campaign committees while they were under consideration for a judgeship.
Makes one wonder how much Harriet Miers gave him.

This recent article on Marina Pacific's new marketing campaign form XBiz, a porn industry trade sheet, notes that, in addition to producing its own material, the "company acts as a distribution house to hundreds of lines, mostly gay, 40 of which can be purchased only through MPD."

Rumsfeld Looking Scared

I don't think I've ever seen him looking anything but serenely dismissive before, like the most frustrating father in the world. A smirk. A downward glance full of indulgence at the sheer idiocy of the children asking him questions. "Well I don't know" and variations thereof to every question, usually culminating in him asking and answering his own questions, as though to fully illustrate the Bush administration's ear to the public will.

Now he's starting to sound like Willy Loman. This was just after Bush's news conference. Either everything is in panic and meltdown at the White House, period(and that's a given either way; entropy has taken hold and they really don't seem to know what to do), and Rumsfeld is simply exhibiting the general tension, or, specifically, Rumsfeld just received some news as to his job that inspired this Nixonian and slightly senile-sounding rant. Put it this way: it's as though Cheney himself hinted to Rumsfeld his days were numbered, about five seconds before he came out.

Speaking of Nixon, let's ask his advice on corrupt administrations and congresses.

More on Tennessee's Ford vs. Corker race. The General actually went to the time and trouble to create a video defending Corker to the only conceivable base he could have. Shocking, truly shocking. Republican Panic

And I'm sure Diebold is at the ready for them, because I don't think I've ever seen a party fuck up a mid-term election race so badly. Quite stunning what happens when Bush has lost his power to frighten and Republican policies have to be seen on their own merits. And its leaders too.

But then, they forced themselves into a position where they would have no one with which to spread blame thin, because they had wiped out any effective opposition, and where there would be hell to pay the minute there was. Then they acted as though there was no way on earth they could ever lose power. Then Katrina happened and made us notice Iraq too, and the rest of us have a feeling slowly dawning at last, not unlike the one that goes, "What the hell was I drinking last night?"

The GOP didn't realize when it was burning all those bridges, eventually everyone was on the other side.

In Harold Ford's opponent's case, that would seem to include God himself, because otherwise this photo of his daughter kissing a girl wouldn't have surfaced. That's justice so poetic, it rhymes.

Most Defensive Press Conference Ever

Listening to it on the radio, I'm struck by the sheer, petulant defensiveness of Bush's tone. He really sounds on edge, as well he should be. And while it's not approaching the sentimental narcissistic voice breaks of Nixon's last press conferences (including the one before his first political death), there's no mistaking the sound of an obstinate president who knows his back is against the wall, and that's what this is. Snippy, angry as hell. Bitter, too. As a bitter person myself, partly because of him, I know the sound.

If I were him, in this position, I'd sound the same. And during his opening speech, he sounded positively unhinged at times. He is definitely not a happy man, no matter how much he's smiling for the cameras. The voice reveals it all. And he keeps asking people to think about the "tough jobs" everyone has to do regarding Iraq, which is his own veiled call for pity.

Which doesn't excuse that he's put himself in this position. And Dave Gregory of NBC got the first question in and delivered it right to his stomach. I'll have a link to it once I can find one, but it was a brutal truth brutally delivered.

Update:
Here it is.

In the past, Democrats and other critics of the war who talked about benchmarks and timetables were labeled as defeatists, defeatocrats or people who wanted to cut and run. So why shouldn’t American people conclude that this is nothing from you other than semantic, rhetorical games and all politics two weeks before an election?”

- David Gregory at today’s press conference.

Apparently the GOP is a great haven for people of all ethnicities, besides white, that want to betray their own. Perhaps it's the price of admission. But the very fact that the Republicans are panicking particularly about minority voting, one way or another--as they usually do--shows how fearful they are of payback after Katrina revealed how little the GOP actually cares about anyone who's not white. No surprise there.

It's that they could imagine that a sane black person would ever vote for them again after that. That's what amazes me.

Sometimes You Have To Say, "No, You're Full Of Shit"

Orcinus' Sara Robinson on the distinction between tolerance of the religious right and capitulation by silence. Myself, I've been saying for years how cons use the liberal impulse to see both sides against them. But she puts it better than me.
As for tolerance: Oh, please. One of the gravest errors liberals have made over the past 40 years is our ongoing failure to ask our conservative friends the hard questions about their beliefs. We wanted to be inclusive. We wanted to respect their religious views. We didn't want to make them squirm. We were being oh so tolerant.

Well, damn it -- sometimes, people who are in error should
be made to squirm a little. They should be called to account for their views, and queried thoroughly on what their agenda is for the rest of us. There comes a time when politeness has to take a back seat to the larger interests of the country -- and we passed that moment way back in the early Reagan years.

Americans on all sides are amazingly ignorant of what "tolerance" means in a country that relies on the free marketplace of ideas to sustain democracy.

The Republican Last Resort: Red-Baiting (?)

Remember toward the end of the 1992 presidential campaign Bush the First got so desperate that he accused Bill Clinton of being a communist spy? Which was particularly hilarious from a president who took as much credit as he could carry with both hands for ending the Cold War and defeating communism. But as I said, he was desperate. Grover Norquist had choked off his funds to punish him for going back on his tax pledge and that was all Bush had. And everyone scratched their heads and laughed at him, and he lost.

Well, the Republican playbook still hasn't changed. When all else fails, accuse the opposing party of being soft on communism, even if it no longer makes any sense to anyone, particularly now that there's a whole new generation of voters that doesn't even remember what communism was.

Well, Bush 2 has done it, making his repetition, and amplification, of his father's errors complete.

That's nice, George. Will you be relating dirt about the Democratic party and Boss Tweed as long as you're at it? It's equally relevant and familiar to most people. God knows it's got something to do with our lives in the present day. Reminds me of Bob Dole's statement in a 1976 VP debate about how all wars were Democrat's doing. Or Ford saying there was no communist domination of Eastern Europe. Now that was being soft on communism.

I guess we should take it as a signal we should stick a fork in them, as they're done. Because if all they have is Willie Horton-type ads and red-baiting, while the trip down memory lane through the GOP's greatest hits is fascinating, it's also a laughable sign that they really have nothing else and only further emphasizes how out of touch they are.

You really couldn't write their absurdity better. If it were a satire it would be impossible to believe. But it's real.

The Tet Moment: Baghdad & Amarah

"From where I stand, boy, this is what winning looks like."
--Henry II in
the Lion In Winter, or George Bush in his first statement on Amarah very soon, you'd think.

Or is it the Saigon moment? In any case, the war has been lost, in any conceivable concept of "winning." Civil war is not just starting there, it's been going on all along; but it's now unavoidably, sickeningly obvious, and our place there increasingly seeming dangerously decorative. And I very much doubt a single soldier over there isn't at least thinking very strongly right now about why the fuck they should vote to keep this sort of thing going. They would know far better than we, and it even stinks from here now. They are only there now to die for a useless, stupid, not even dignified twerp's ego, a man who consistently ran everything he ever had charge of into the ground, and we let him become president. How will we ever live with that when the full weight of it hits us?

Why was this done? What was accomplished? What did we have in mind? This is like war conducted by Homer Simpson. We just went in and fucked shit up, killing 600,000(or more Iraqis, throwing their whole country into hell, only causing more damage the longer we stay, to ourselves, to the soldiers, to the Iraqis, to the world, and to our once much more respected place in the world, each person dying for a poll bump.

We conducted it like all there is to war is blowing shit up(this, I maintain, is the inevitable effect of too much Jerry Bruckheimer--look what it did to Tom Cruise), and, given that strange and terrible things happen in war, we didn't bother with anything civilized before that point, going for the naked-human-pyramid approach to hearts & minds while you could still smell Saddam's months-uncleaned beard in the air near his spider hole. As though war means that, rather than sometimes having to do bad things, that getting to do the bad things is the whole reason you do it.

And with such unnecessary arrogance and an apparent convinction from the beginning that we would always be this powerful and could show our worst side to the whole world without considering the long term. And we threw away something precious that was to our advantage, if we weren't so ignorant. The rest of the world no longer thinks of us as important.

It wasn't until Bush came along that most countries started to think that, whatever they thought of us, it was getting clearer that they might not need us, or be amused by us, or charmed by us, or even complicit with us, anymore. This is what Bush has let happen. In many ways, he's needlessly squandered just about all the political capital of an entire century up to him, not to mention his own sometime around August 2005. Really, he's squandered it in all ways you can imagine, and a few you previously considered unthinkable. This is without what are, unpleasantly, starting to look like more plausible theories of how 9/11 fits into his presidency.

What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and maxes it out almost as quickly?

Knowing the Republican devolution of intellect(they really did used to be smarter than this and far better at this supervillainy), I wouldn't be surprised if this was their version of an October Surprise. I bet they think they can still somehow blame this on the Democrats.

"We create our own version of reality," one of them said once to a New York Times reporter. (and another, Judy Miller, helped them with the bricks and mortar and was very surprised to find herself walled in and the cool kids long since run away giggling at the nerd, not that she knew it). Their own version. Reality(tm).

So, how's that working out? Hammered that round hole enough to get the square peg through, GOP?

And apparently Putin takes Bush's attitude and raises it to new heights. Less than a week after he had a journalist, and longtime critic, murdered(one of many attempts), this:
Vladimir Putin's international image was tainted today after it emerged he had let slip another of his infamous remarks - this time praising the president of Israel for alleged sex offences.

"He turned out to be a strong man, raped 10 women," the Russian president was quoted by Russian media as saying at a meeting in Moscow with Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert. "I never would have expected it of him. He has surprised us all, we all envy him!"

This is what is left of the superpowers. Look at what has been lost. It needs no complex words. It is just all wrong. That is all.

Inevitably

The Republican coalition is rent asunder and the circular firing squad has begun.

So beautiful. But what did they expect when they stole all power for themselves? Sure, they could keep blaming the Democrats until facts caught up to them. But now that it has, where do you go from there?

Dick freaking Armey has this to say:

In an interview published last month in “The Elephant in the Room,” a book by Ryan Sager about splits among conservatives, Mr. Armey accused Congressional Republicans of “blatant pandering to James Dobson” and “his gang of thugs,” whom Mr. Armey called “real nasty bullies” — arguments he reprised on the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal and in an open letter on the Web site organization FreedomWorks.

In an interview this week, Mr. Armey said catering to Dr. Dobson and his allies had led the party to abandon budget-cutting. And he said Christian conservatives could cost Republicans seats around the country, especially in Ohio.

“The Republicans are talking about things like gay marriage and so forth, and the Democrats are talking about the things people care about, like how do I pay my bills?” he said.

Mr. Armey also pinned some of the blame on Tom DeLay, the former Republican House majority leader, who “was always more comfortable with the social conservatives, the evangelical wing of the party, than he was with the business wing.”

Mr. Armey, who identifies himself as an evangelical, said he was tired of Christian conservative leaders threatening that their supporters would stay away from the ballot box unless they got what they wanted.

“Economic conservatives,” he argued, were emerging as the swing voters in need of attention, in part because they had become more likely to vote Democratic in the years since President Bill Clinton was in office. “A lot of people believe he brought us from deficits to surpluses, and there is a certain empirical evidence there,” Mr. Armey acknowledged.

He says that's what he'll do if the Democrats win. After his work on the Military Detainees Bill, I can only say: everybody really make sure to vote.

All Hail Emperor George the Second

With only a pen, he murdered American democracy this morning while the lying, smirking traitors McCain(he's not just as bad as the rest, he's worse because he knows what torture is like) and Graham held its arms behind its back. And even conservatives are freaking about this. A lawsuit has been filed to challenge this, but the law itself makes such lawsuits meaningless.

How soon can we expect the disappearing of his enemies? I'd say the day after he loses Congress. He doesn't really need them anymore anyway.

You've been warned since 2000 and you let it happen anyway. You must not mind.

GOP Yanks More Campaign Funds

This time for a candidate in Crawford, Texas. And they even look to be losing the military vote. I guess they were hoping that by now too many would be dead for that to matter. They're running scared and it's beautiful to behold.

Justice comes; one just has to be patient. Vote this November.

A Typical Hastert Supporter

Back to local matters(for me anyway): the General shows us a friend of Dennis Hastert, a board candidate who's apparently facing 26 counts of sexually assaulting young girls. With friends like these, how can Hastert lose? No matter how many more are revealed, the GOP child molestation ring he's been shielding won't let him down!

Need A Laugh?

Take a look at this crackpot theory.

:: Men will exhibit symmetrical facial features, look athletic, and have squarer jaws, deeper voices and bigger penises.

:: Women will develop lighter skin, large clear eyes, pert breasts, glossy hair, even features and smooth hairless skin.

Uh...sounds more like the fantasies of Bob Guccione. And Hitler. And anime freaks.

And as it's 100,000 years in the future, the benefit is that this scientist cannot be proven an idiot.

  Bush Lost Talk Radio?

Jesus, he must be fucked. He's lost Michael Savage and others(but criminals like Rush Limbaugh, of course, will always provide him cover--it's the only thing that has saved Rush from the jail time he himself has recommended for addicts like himself).

He really did think that he had a free ride. I'm surprised that I was correct. And he will go down as the worst president in history. James Buchanan must finally be resting smug in his grave.

Here's a sign of how desperate the GOP is: they have trotted out the Willie Horton technique. (hat tip to Andrew Sullivan.)
